  • UK Supreme Court judgment in JR87: Religious Education

    Mon 24 Nov 2025

    Dear Parents and Guardians,

We want to let you know about a recent court case that has attracted some attention. The case, which concerned how Religious Education and collective worship are taught in one school, has now been considered by the High Court, the Court of Appeal and, finally, the UK Supreme Court. Because the judgment is complex and wide-ranging, it will take some time for the Department of Education to consider what it means for schools across Northern Ireland.

For our school, there is no immediate change. Catholic maintained schools, including ours, can continue to teach Religious Education from a Catholic perspective and provide Catholic collective worship. The Court made clear that this remains entirely valid within our education system.

Our Catholic ethos has always encouraged us to welcome every child of all faith backgrounds and of none and to value the trust parents place in us. This ethos, grounded in respect, care and the dignity of every person, positions us well for any future guidance or adjustments that may come from the Department. As always, we will continue to adapt thoughtfully while keeping the wellbeing and formation of your children at the heart of what we do.

This is an important issue and we will stay closely informed as more detail becomes available. If the Department issues any new guidance, we will update you promptly.

Thank you for your continued support of our school community. We remain committed to providing an inclusive, nurturing and high-quality education for every child in our care.

    Yours sincerely,

    Peter Cush

    Principal
